UBS’s proprietary Turbu-lens market fragility indicator reached 1.0 on Aug. 19, its maximum alert level and first reading at that threshold since late 2024. The machine-learning tool combines about 100 data points, including high-yield corporate credit-default swaps, G10 currency volatility and S&P 500 CTA positioning, to assess the risk and potential severity of a market disruption rather than predict its timing. Maxwell Grinacoff, head of US equity derivatives research at UBS, and his team said historical market behavior has often featured sharp volatility after the gauge reaches 1.0. The report identifies the September Federal Open Market Committee meeting and November US midterm elections as key risk events, with options markets implying that the S&P 500 could move about 1% in a single day around either event. UBS said market fragility is at an extreme level, although the specific catalyst for a major move remains unclear. Investors are expected to focus on Federal Reserve policy and US political developments.
