President Donald Trump said Tuesday he was considering renaming Lake Ontario "Lake America" as the United States and Canada’s trade dispute intensified. The proposal echoes his unilateral action last year, by executive order, to rename the Gulf of Mexico the Gulf of America. Canada was expected to announce retaliatory measures after the Trump administration imposed 50% tariffs on $20 billion of Canadian goods over the weekend when bilateral talks broke down. Ontario, Canada’s most populous province and home to its auto industry, is central to the escalating dispute. Trump has also threatened new 50% tariffs on Canadian vehicles, auto parts and steel, while Prime Minister Mark Carney accused Washington of seeking to subordinate Canada and destroy major industries including autos, steel and aluminum. The countries’ deeply integrated trade in autos, energy, agriculture and manufacturing has left businesses and consumers facing uncertainty over higher prices. Canada was expected to outline support for affected workers, while Carney said Ottawa may favor targeted retaliation over matching U.S. tariffs dollar for dollar.
