President Donald Trump has floated renaming Lake Ontario as Lake America, but Canada rejected the idea as tensions intensified after U.S.-Canada trade talks collapsed. Mélanie Joly, Canada's minister of industry, said Aug. 25, "We'll always call it Lake Ontario. Period," while Trump later said he might not have been joking. The proposal followed Trump's formal renaming of the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America but was not accompanied by an executive order or proclamation. The dispute is unfolding alongside a tariff conflict in which the U.S. imposed 50 percent duties on about $20 billion of Canadian goods and Canada announced retaliatory tariffs of up to 50 percent on roughly $20 billion of U.S. imports, effective Sept. 8. The measures cover a small share of more than $700 billion in annual goods trade between the deeply integrated economies.
