Canada announced C$27.6 billion ($19.94 billion) in retaliatory tariffs on United States goods, matching Washington’s new duties dollar-for-dollar. The measures take effect September 8 and impose tariffs of 15%, 25% and 50% across 700 imported products. Canada also introduced C$7.5 billion in new and enhanced support for small and medium-sized businesses, corporate cash flow and workers at risk from the tariffs. The move follows President Donald Trump’s 50% tariffs on $20 billion of Canadian imports, which took effect Saturday after talks to prevent them collapsed. The tit-for-tat measures mark a new low in Canada-U.S. relations, although a Canadian government official said the structure was designed to limit the effect on Canadian consumers and businesses while still affecting the United States.
