Palantir Technologies’ Maven Smart System (MSS) has been formally designated a Pentagon program of record, giving it dedicated budget lines, multi-year funding and greater institutional permanence. Deputy Secretary of Defense Steve Feinberg signed the designation memo on March 9, 2026, directing full implementation before the end of fiscal year 2026 on September 30. The fiscal year 2027 budget request includes $2.3 billion over five years to expand MSS. Oversight will shift to the CDAO (Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Office), with future contracting under the US Army. Palantir won a $480 million IDIQ (flexible multiple-order contract) in May 2024, which has grown to approximately $1.3 billion through 2029. MSS is operational across all US combatant commands, has more than 20,000 users and has supported thousands of targeted strikes by combining data from satellites, drones and sensor networks with AI for target identification, decision-making and command-and-control. Analysts at Wedbush view the designation as a significant positive for Palantir because formal acquisition status and requested funding reduce the risk that government AI spending will remain experimental or be withdrawn.
