Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said Republicans are likely privately supporting Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney as trade tensions between Washington and Ottawa intensify. Speaking Monday night at an event in New York, Clinton cited Canada-bound exports accounting for 40% of Ohio's exports and 60% of Michigan's exports, arguing that Republicans in those states and across the country are unlikely to favor a trade war. Canada is expected Tuesday to announce retaliatory tariffs after President Trump imposed 50% tariffs on more than $20 billion in Canadian goods, with Canada's measures scheduled to take effect on Sept. 8. Carney said Ottawa would respond "dollar for dollar" and may target its retaliation more precisely if Trump proceeds with additional 50% tariffs on cars, trucks, auto parts and steel at the beginning of next year. The disputes add to strained U.S.-Canada relations during Trump's second term, including his comments about making Canada the 51st state.
