Secretary of State Marco Rubio has told foreign ministers from several allied countries that the U.S. does not expect to launch additional airstrikes against Iran for the time being, Axios reported on Aug. 25. Washington is instead intensifying pressure through new economic sanctions, a maritime blockade and efforts to maximize oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz while blocking Iranian exports. U.S. officials say mine-clearing operations and increased tanker traffic through the strait’s southern lane have sharply reduced Iran’s influence over global energy markets, while almost no tankers have been seen at Kharg Island, Iran’s main oil export hub, in the past two weeks. Military action remains possible if Iran strikes first, and the current policy could last at least until after the November midterm elections. There are no formal negotiations underway, although U.S. officials say the pressure campaign could push Tehran back to the negotiating table. White House special envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner are scheduled to visit U.S. Central Command on Aug. 26 for a briefing.
