LS ELECTRIC and GE Vernova have signed an agreement to establish a joint venture tentatively named Grid X Technology, focused on voltage-source converter (VSC) high-voltage direct current (HVDC) technology. The partners will develop solutions for Korea’s HVDC projects, including transmission of renewable electricity from the southwestern region to the greater Seoul area, while coordinating the supply of key components and equipment and pursuing entry into the global HVDC market. VSC HVDC can control voltage and current without support from an external grid, making it suitable for connecting large renewable-energy projects to weaker grids. LS ELECTRIC has experience supplying core components for commercial HVDC projects and has built a large HVDC production base at its Busan plant. GE Vernova, a global energy technology and power infrastructure company spun off from General Electric in April 2024, will contribute its technology and expertise.
