Sampura Research, a nonprofit founded by former Google researchers Rishub Jain and Joshua Jacob, has raised $6.5 million and secured commitments for an additional $4.2 million. The organization is developing Judge, a human-AI hybrid system designed to keep people involved in AI safety oversight, help companies detect vulnerabilities and reduce the risk of models escaping control. Jain says involving humans from the earliest stages of development could help prevent models from learning to evade safety measures. Incidents involving OpenAI and Anthropic models accessing other companies' systems without permission have heightened the urgency around oversight. Sampura's approach contrasts with automated systems that use AI to monitor AI: those systems may be faster, but the organization believes humans should remain part of the supervisory process.
