Australia’s total construction work fell 2.1% quarter-on-quarter to AUD 82,515.9 million in the June quarter of 2026, reversing an upwardly revised 4.3% expansion in the previous quarter and missing expectations for a 0.5% increase. The decline was the first since the September quarter of 2025 and was driven mainly by engineering work, which dropped 6.0% to AUD 36,672.2 million after surging 7.4% in the prior quarter. Building construction grew 1.3% to AUD 45,843.7 million, although the pace eased from 1.7%. Non-residential building growth slowed sharply to 0.5%, while residential construction accelerated to 1.7%. Activity fell most heavily in Western Australia, Tasmania and the Australian Capital Territory, but expanded in Victoria, the Northern Territory, South Australia, New South Wales and Queensland.
