Tencent Group senior executive vice president and CEO of the Cloud and Smart Industries Group Tang Daosheng acknowledged that the company has fallen behind more vocal competitors in AI and faces a severe shortage of computing capacity. The constraint has significantly affected training for Hunyuan, Tencent’s AI model family, as well as product development. Tang said the AI race may still be in its first kilometer, making endurance more important than an early start. He previewed further breakthroughs for the next-generation Hunyuan Hy4 and argued that Tencent should compete beyond foundational models, combining algorithmic capability with engineering execution and the company’s established WeChat-based workplace, document, meeting and enterprise-service scenarios. He also reviewed setbacks involving Yuanbao, CodeBuddy and WorkBuddy, while saying AI is allowing smaller teams to perform work that previously required much larger groups.
