Taiwan’s stock market rebounded sharply on August 26 after testing 45,000 points, gaining more than 600 points intraday, while the Taiwan dollar remained range-bound on thin turnover. The currency opened at NT$31.83, briefly weakened to NT$31.887 and traded near NT$31.87 before pausing at NT$31.85 at midday, up 1.8 cents. Taipei Forex Inc. recorded turnover of just US$619 million, or about NT$20 billion. Traders are watching US-Iran ceasefire negotiations, NVIDIA’s earnings and guidance, elevated oil prices, US Personal Consumption Expenditures inflation data, and Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh’s August 28 speech at the Jackson Hole Global Central Bank Symposium. The Taiwan dollar had already diverged from stocks on August 25, when equities rose 407.14 points to 45,169.46 but the currency fell 1.4 cents to NT$31.868 amid hedging arbitrage and capital outflows. Analysts expect subdued, range-bound trading until the policy speech and NVIDIA results clarify interest-rate and AI investment prospects.
