Destry Damayanti, 62, the sole nominee to become Indonesia’s central bank governor, told a parliamentary confirmation panel on Aug. 26 that she would support economic growth and job creation while safeguarding the rupiah, payment systems and financial stability. Confirmation would make her Indonesia’s first female central bank governor. With President Prabowo Subianto’s ruling coalition holding a parliamentary majority and no presidential nominee for the post rejected since 2008, her approval is widely expected. The committee is expected to decide on Aug. 27, followed by a vote in the full parliament, while interviews for the senior deputy governor candidate are scheduled for Aug. 26. Damayanti became acting governor after the abrupt mid-term resignation of former Governor Perry Warjiyo and was later nominated formally by Prabowo. The rupiah is down about 6% against the U.S. dollar this year, while Indonesian stocks have fallen more than 25%. Bank Indonesia has raised its policy rate by 100 basis points since May, including an off-cycle hike in June, but held rates steady at Damayanti’s first meeting as acting governor. She has pledged to strengthen exchange-rate intervention and optimise market-sensitive monetary operations to improve policy transmission and liquidity. Economists expect the Cornell University graduate, who has served as senior deputy governor since 2019, to provide policy continuity and maintain good relations with the Prabowo administration, although it remains unclear whether she would receive a full five-year term or serve the remainder of Warjiyo’s term, which expires in 2028.
