Tornado Cash co-founder Roman Storm said public court records show blockchain analytics firm Chainalysis operated a Tornado Cash relayer in 2022 and earned fees on withdrawals routed through it, even as the company later worked with US prosecutors tracing mixer activity. He said his lawyers subpoenaed Chainalysis personnel, Chainalysis moved to quash the subpoena with government support, and a Chainalysis witness planned to invoke the Fifth Amendment rather than testify. Storm cast the episode as a double standard in which a government tracking partner profited from Tornado Cash infrastructure while he faces ongoing criminal prosecution for helping develop the open-source mixer. A federal judge has postponed his Southern District of New York retrial to April 26, 2027, and his Rule 29 acquittal motion remains pending after an August 2025 partial conviction on an unlicensed money-transmitting conspiracy count and a deadlock on heavier money-laundering and sanctions charges.
