Yangtze Memory Technologies Co. (YMTC), China’s largest NAND flash producer, is targeting the No. 1 position in the global market as early as the end of 2027. The company filed on Aug. 21 for a Shanghai initial public offering that could raise about $4.9 billion, while an IPO prospectus cited in a Financial Times report on Aug. 26 specified a planned 33 billion yuan, or about $5 billion, fundraising target for production upgrades and research and development. Counterpoint Research estimated YMTC held 14% of global NAND shipments in the second quarter, matching Japan’s Kioxia and trailing Samsung Electronics and the combined SK hynix-Solidigm group. TrendForce had ranked YMTC third globally in the first quarter. NAND flash is non-volatile memory that retains data without power and is used mainly in smartphones and tablets. YMTC’s growing scale signals that it has become a significant competitor rather than a low-end challenger.
