Taiwan’s Legislative Yuan passed the National Defense Autonomy and Unmanned Vehicle Industry Development Act on third reading, directing the central government to allocate NT$240 billion (about $7.6 billion) over six years—NT$40 billion (about $1.3 billion) a year in principle—through annual budget procedures. The opposition-shaped law names the Ministry of Economic Affairs as competent authority, brings the Ministry of National Defense into joint defense procurement, research subsidies, and related reviews, and covers coastal surveillance drones, coastal attack drones, and small target acquisition drones, while creating a National Unmanned Vehicle Industry Development Strategy Special Committee. The Executive Yuan and Ministry of Economic Affairs expressed deep regret, arguing the regular-budget path and committee design could invite political gridlock, budget crowding-out, and weaker continuity for more than 274 supply-chain firms; the government said it will still seek funds as quickly as possible for urgent unmanned-vehicle procurement.
