Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said Republicans may be privately supporting Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney as he confronts President Donald Trump in an escalating trade dispute. Clinton said Republican senators were unlikely to welcome a trade war with Canada and may be cheering Carney’s response. She cited Canada’s importance to Ohio and Michigan, saying 40% of Ohio exports and 60% of Michigan exports go north, while USTR (U.S. trade policy office) data showed Canada represented about 32% and 39% of the states’ goods exports, respectively, in 2025. The comments came after U.S.-Canada trade talks collapsed before a deadline. Trump’s 50% tariffs on roughly $20 billion of Canadian goods took effect Aug. 22 after a three-day reprieve. Canada said it would respond dollar for dollar with tariffs of 15%, 25% and 50% on C$27.6 billion of U.S. imports from Sept. 8, alongside C$7.5 billion in support for affected workers and businesses. U.S.-Canada goods trade totaled about $719.5 billion in 2025, and Trump has threatened additional 50% tariffs on Canadian vehicles, auto parts and steel next year.
