President Lee Jae-myung held a private dinner with Samsung Electronics Chairman Lee Jae-yong at an undisclosed location in Seoul on Aug. 26, following his Aug. 20 meeting with SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won. The discussions were believed to have covered domestic and international economic issues, including the government’s three major megaprojects—semiconductors, physical artificial intelligence and AI data centers—and pressure from the Donald Trump administration for South Korean companies to expand investment in the United States. A central focus was the Honam semiconductor cluster, a proposed 800 trillion won ($577.4 billion) project linking fabrication facilities in Yongin, Gyeonggi Province, and Gwangju, South Jeolla Province. Securing power and water supplies, improving regulatory approvals and addressing labor rules are key obstacles. The outreach is part of President Lee’s effort to incorporate business views into industrial, investment, employment and regulatory policy, with a separate meeting with Hyundai Motor Group Chairman Euisun Chung reportedly being coordinated.
