Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), the world’s largest container shipping line by fleet size, has suspended service to Russian Black Sea ports after a drone strike. The decision adds to a growing withdrawal of carriers as Ukrainian attacks on commercial vessels intensify under Operation MoLoChKa, a campaign targeting Russian-linked ships and port infrastructure that began on July 6, 2026. By late July, more than 236 strikes had been carried out in the Black Sea and Sea of Azov. Turkey’s Kalyon and Russia’s Fesco have also halted relevant operations after vessels were damaged or lost, while traffic through the Turkish Straits reportedly fell from about 200 vessels a day to as few as 25-30. The disruption could cost Turkey $20 billion, and rising war risk insurance premiums are making some voyages uneconomic. Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has called for a moratorium on attacks against civilian shipping in the Black Sea region.
