Unstoppable Domains and five brand partners have abandoned plans to seek ICANN recognition for 14 Web3 domain extensions, including .crypto, .wallet, .bitcoin, .brave, .polygon, .nft, .dao, .unstoppable, .zil and .blockchain, along with partner strings such as .privacy, .anime, .agent and .twin. Nine planned bids would have cost more than $2 million in base evaluation fees at $227,000 per application. CEO Matthew Gould said the 2021 crypto and NFT bubble inflated perceptions of Web3 demand, which he called small and niche, while ICANN integration would have forced more than 4 million existing names into paid traditional DNS registration with data disclosure. The pullback contrasts with a crowded 2026 round of more than 1,600 primary applications and heavy spending by others such as Link Freedom Group. Customers who bought eight of the affected extensions on or after March 5, 2025, or .blockchain names since June 5, 2024, can request refunds through Sept. 25. Existing names remain usable on-chain but will not resolve through standard browser DNS.
