President Donald Trump said in a Truth Social post Wednesday afternoon that he did not think the GOP fully grasped how badly it was “f---ing up,” amid Republican backlash over his trade policies. Trump escalated the U.S. trade war with Canada over the weekend by allowing a 50% tariff on about $20 billion in goods to take effect. Canada retaliated with tariffs matching the new levies in rate and scope. The tariffs, combined with an exemption on beef tariffs announced last week, angered some Republicans. Sen. Thom Tillis, R-N.C., called the subsidized beef a “mistake,” while Sen. John Barrasso, R-Wyo., said Americans wanted U.S. beef rather than foreign imports. Beef prices have risen amid a livestock shortage, reaching $6.89 per pound for ground beef in July, up 57% from 2021. Trump’s approval rating was 38.2% in Nate Silver’s Silver Bulletin polling average on Wednesday, close to his second-term low of 38.1% earlier this month and down about four points since the start of the year. A Reuters/Ipsos poll released Monday put his approval at a second-term low of 33%. The same poll found support for U.S. military action in Iran at 31%, down three points from the previous survey and six points from March. An Aug. 17 survey found that, for the first time in about a decade, more voters preferred Democrats than Republicans to handle the economy, by 38%.
