Mercer International shares jumped 84.07% to $0.76 in extended trading after the company announced that the Government of Canada, through Prairies Economic Development Canada (PrairiesCan), committed C$20 million, or about US$14 million, to subsidiary Mercer Peace River Pulp Ltd. under the Regional Tariff Response Initiative. The package comprises a C$1 million non-repayable grant and a C$19 million repayable contribution, with repayment scheduled to begin in 2031. The funding will support modernization and productivity improvements at the northern Alberta mill, while preparing it for expanded bio-energy production and carbon capture and storage. The rally followed a 3.17% intraday decline that left Mercer shares at a $0.41 close.
