A federal judge halted the Trump administration’s plan to restructure the Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Fair Housing Initiatives Program, which has historically supported more than 100 nonprofit organizations investigating housing discrimination complaints and assisting tenants and homebuyers. U.S. District Judge Myong Joun ruled that HUD had not adequately explained why it wanted to replace the program’s traditional grants, generally ranging from $75,000 to $425,000, with five larger awards using $46 million of the $56 million appropriated by Congress. The plan included a $25 million grant for a law school and a $10 million award available to a state or local agency, as well as new requirements concerning the administration’s positions on “gender ideology” and immigration. Joun ordered HUD to return to the original funding framework after the National Fair Housing Alliance and Massachusetts Fair Housing Center challenged the changes.
