British car production fell 10.6% year-on-year to 61,767 units in July 2026, according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), as weaker exports and earlier summer maintenance shutdowns reduced output. Car exports declined 16%, including falls of 15% to the European Union, 18% to the United States, 19% to Turkey, 37% to China and 24% to Japan. Commercial vehicle production plunged 34% to 1,888 units, while total vehicle exports fell 15.9% to 47,377 units. Electric and hybrid vehicle manufacturing rose 6.8% to 25,678 units, marking its first increase of the year and accounting for more than four in 10 cars built. UK factories have produced just under 450,000 cars and commercial vehicles so far in 2026, and annual output could reach 1 million units by the end of the decade if manufacturers secure fresh investment and improve competitiveness.
