Free agent forward Jonathan Kuminga signed a two-year, $12.4 million contract with the Minnesota Timberwolves, ESPN’s Shams Charania reported, citing his agent Aaron Turner. The second season includes a player option. Minnesota turned to Kuminga after trading Julius Randle and Naz Reid and looking for a power forward. Kuminga chose the Timberwolves over the Los Angeles Lakers after the Atlanta Hawks declined his $24.3 million club option in June, making him an unrestricted free agent. Atlanta and the Lakers had earlier explored a sign-and-trade agreement. The former seventh overall pick by Golden State will enter his sixth NBA season with career averages of 12.5 points and 4.2 rebounds in 294 games, including 98 starts. He spent 4 1/2 seasons with the Golden State Warriors before being traded to Atlanta during the past season after relations soured during acrimonious negotiations in the summer of 2025. He averaged 12.2 points in 36 games last season, including 20 with Golden State and 16 with Atlanta, helping the Hawks qualify for the postseason before they lost to the eventual World Champion New York Knicks. His career-best scoring average was 16.1 points in 2023-24, when he also set highs with 74 games and 46 starts. In the 2025 playoffs, he scored 30, 26 and 23 points against Minnesota in a second-round series the Warriors lost in five games. The Chicago Bulls and Portland Trail Blazers also reportedly expressed interest.
