South Korea’s LG Innotek (011070.KS) will supply 5-megapixel automotive camera modules to Zoox, Amazon’s autonomous driving subsidiary, under a long-term agreement covering the next several years. The deal marks the company’s first scaled supply of camera modules for robotaxis already in commercial service and supports its expansion beyond smartphone optics into physical artificial intelligence applications such as autonomous driving and robotics. The modules will be installed on Zoox’s purpose-built vehicles, which have no driver’s seat, steering wheel or pedals and carry four passengers facing one another. Zoox, acquired by Amazon in 2020, has built a dedicated robotaxi production facility in Hayward, California, launched a public robotaxi-hailing service on roads in Las Vegas and is expanding user-facing services in San Francisco. Its vehicles use cameras with different fields of view to monitor the full 360-degree area around the car, reducing blind spots and supporting driving decisions. The camera data is combined with LiDAR, radar and infrared sensing. LG Innotek was also reported to have won a contract to supply camera modules for Tesla’s robotaxi and plans to mass-produce them after further discussions with the automaker.
