Solana has reduced its target slot time from 350 milliseconds to 300 milliseconds as epoch 1024 closed around 15:20 UTC on Aug. 28, the second step in the SIMD-0525 roadmap. The change follows the epoch 1020 reduction from 400ms to 350ms on Aug. 21 and brings the network to its fastest target slot time since launching in 2020. The upgrade shortens each slot by 50ms while leaving ticks per slot, the leader span and the 432,000-slot epoch structure unchanged, so total blockspace is not intended to change. It also narrows the time a validator controls transaction ordering, an effect the Solana Foundation links to improved censorship resistance. Progression was tied to skipped-slot performance: the rate remained about 0.077% through epoch 1021, below the threshold considered safe by Anza and the Foundation. The next planned step is 250ms, followed by a 200ms target, but the roadmap is explicitly tentative and each stage can be paused. Faster slots may reduce latency for decentralized exchanges, high-frequency trading and MEV searchers, while increasing the infrastructure requirements for competitive block building.
