Poland’s Deputy Prime Minister Krzysztof Gawkowski has asked the European Commission to impose a €250 million ($291 million) fine on Meta Platforms and investigate alleged violations of the Digital Services Act. The request, made in a letter dated Aug. 26, 2026, followed a CERT Polska test in which Meta removed only 16 of 122 fraudulent advertisements flagged to the company, leaving 86.8% online. Poland’s action also follows a Warsaw appellate-court ruling involving businessman Rafał Brzoska that treated Meta as an active participant in its advertising ecosystem, potentially limiting the platform’s liability protections. Meta said it proactively removed about 137,000 scam ads originating from Poland between July 2025 and June 2026. Under the DSA, the European Commission can fine companies as much as 6% of global annual turnover, while very large online platforms must assess and mitigate systemic risks.
