Japan's government has approved a ¥147.8 billion support package for areas hit by last month's magnitude-7.1 earthquake in Kumamoto Prefecture, funded from fiscal 2026 budget reserves. A core tourism measure, the Kyushu Fukkou Support Discount, will begin with stays from October 1, offering 60% subsidies in Kumamoto and Kagoshima and 50% in the other five Kyushu prefectures, with roughly ¥15.5 billion ($97.1 million) drawn from contingency reserves. Per-person nightly caps range from ¥20,000 for lodging-only or one-night packages to ¥35,000 for multi-prefecture tours. The broader package also backs well and home repairs, small-business restoration, evacuation facilities and industrial recovery, while authorities work to reverse reputational damage after steep visitor declines and about ¥2.7 billion in accommodation cancellations.
