The Sandbox has committed to a 1:1 compensation plan for wallets that held bridged SAND on Base or BNB Smart Chain before the August 21 exploit, to be paid in Ethereum SAND from treasury with no new minting. A two-week claim window is due to open within two weeks of the project’s August 27 post-mortem and remain open for two weeks; two centralized exchanges hold more than 72% of eligible balances and will distribute repayment directly, while other holders will use a claims portal. About 14.7 million SAND, precisely 14,742,341.84 tokens worth roughly $697,000 to $700,000, was drained from the Ethereum vault—about 0.5% of the 3 billion maximum supply—while total economic damage reached about $1.5 million and the attacker realized roughly $987,000. A configuration flaw in Base and BNB Chain SAND contracts let attackers become the sole verifier of bridge messages, mint more than 339 trillion unbacked tokens, and drain real Ethereum SAND; the compromised contracts will be permanently retired, and Ethereum and Polygon SAND were untouched. The incident adds to a string of 2024–2025 bridge attacks across crypto that have contributed to more than $4 billion in losses since 2021; SAND was trading near $0.04 at the post-mortem, down about 10.4% over seven days.
