OpenAI will begin showing advertisements to ChatGPT Free and Go users in India, starting with campaigns for 50 brands through partnerships with WPP and Omnicom. The company said it will launch an ad manager next month, allowing marketers to create campaigns with a daily minimum budget of ₹725 ($7.60). The move follows a change to OpenAI’s terms of service earlier this month indicating that ads would appear while users interact with the AI assistant. OpenAI said in February that ChatGPT had more than 100 million weekly active users in India, many of them on the free or lower-priced Go tiers. The company has invested heavily in India, launching a sub-$5 ChatGPT Go plan in August 2025, offering a limited promotion that made the plan free for a full year, advertising around the Women’s Premier League and Indian Premier League cricket tournaments, and hiring Uber’s India head to lead its expansion efforts. OpenAI began showing ads to U.S. users in February and expanded the program to Europe earlier this month. As it considers a potential IPO (initial public offering), expected this year or next, the company is seeking to strengthen its revenue sources. The Wall Street Journal reported that OpenAI recorded $6.7 billion in revenue in the second quarter ended June 2026, up from $5.7 billion in the previous quarter. The Information reported last November that OpenAI was targeting 220 million paying subscribers by 2030, compared with 35 million users paying for its Plus and Pro plans at that time.
