Valmet has secured an order from Metsä Group for what it describes as the world's first commercial-scale 3D Fiber molded-fiber production line. The line will be installed at Metsä Group's Äänekoski mill in central Finland, alongside the companies' joint demonstration plant, and is scheduled to start in 2028 with nominal capacity exceeding 100 million products per year. The order was booked in Valmet's third-quarter 2026 intake, while financial terms were not disclosed. The project follows the commercial launch of the 3D Fiber process in June 2026 and years of development and pilot work since the demonstration plant began operating in 2022. The technology forms three-dimensional products such as trays, plates and food containers directly from cellulose pulp, removing intermediate processing stages and combining fiber processing, production and automatic packing in an end-to-end system. Valmet and Metsä Group are positioning the line as a test of whether molded fiber can compete with plastic packaging in high-volume applications. Metsä Group reported 2025 sales of EUR 5.8 billion, while Valmet reported approximately EUR 5.2 billion and is listed on Nasdaq Helsinki.
