The proposed inscription would credit Trump with renovating and restoring the John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts, while the Justice Department argues the language recognizes his restoration efforts rather than formally renaming the institution. The board also renamed the grounds President Donald J. Trump Plaza and plans to close the main building for two years while keeping the REACH facility open. After a federal judge ordered Trump’s name removed and previously blocked a renaming, the board told the court it would delay adding his name to the building or grounds until at least October 8. Lutnick said demolition could eventually become necessary if renovations cannot proceed, though he stressed that it is not imminent. The center has warned that complying with the name-removal order could cause unrecoverable losses potentially reaching hundreds of millions of dollars.
