Cardano Lightning is a pre-production state channel system inspired by Bitcoin's Lightning Network and designed for fast, low-cost payments on Cardano's eUTXO model. Presented by PolyCrypt engineer Ilja von Hoessle during a Developer's Office Hour session on Aug. 24, the system combines a fork of the Lightning Development Kit's LDK Node, a Rust-based relay for coordinating nodes and a smart contract that manages channel liquidity. Through the Konduit protocol, users may pay in ADA while merchants receive native BTC over the Lightning Network without wrapped tokens, intermediary bridges or third-party custodial swap services. The project builds on earlier Cardano efforts to connect with Bitcoin's payment infrastructure and on Hydra-based atomic-swap development, although community reaction remains cautiously optimistic as the technology matures.
