Rafael Leao has turned down Aston Villa and signed for Galatasaray in a transfer worth €45 million plus €2 million in performance-related add-ons. The 27-year-old Portuguese international reportedly chose Galatasaray’s offer of €10 million to €12 million net per season over Villa’s proposal of about €7 million to €7.5 million. Villa explored both a loan with an obligation to buy and a permanent transfer valued at roughly €46 million to €50 million, but its effort to reduce the wage bill limited what it could offer. Leao leaves AC Milan after 291 appearances, 80 goals and 61 assists in the latest transfer account; an earlier account cited 65 assists. He played a central role in Milan’s 2022 Serie A title and departs after a transfer saga involving earlier Galatasaray bids, Aston Villa and Fenerbahce. Galatasaray’s recruitment has increasingly focused on players in or near their prime, following the club’s record deal for Victor Osimhen.
