OpenAI has launched commercial operations in Brazil with a São Paulo team as the country ranks among ChatGPT’s top three global markets, and has rolled out ChatGPT ads in India for free users and the ₹399 ($4) monthly Go plan. Brazilian users send an estimated 215 million ChatGPT messages a day, and the country ranks second worldwide for OpenAI API developers. In India, one of ChatGPT’s largest and most active markets, ads are clearly labeled, shown below responses, and withheld from users under 18; managed ads are live and self-serve ads begin September 4. The India launch extends a program already active in 38 countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Japan, Korea and 31 European nations, after an initial push featuring 50 brands with WPP and Omnicom. OpenAI is pursuing ad revenue to support free and lower-cost access and help cover inference costs as it faces pressure to justify an $852 billion valuation ahead of a planned 2027 public listing.
