United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said on Aug. 27 that he expected the United States to make a new payment of hundreds of millions of dollars toward its unpaid U.N. dues "very soon." The Trump administration informed Congress of its intention to pay $725 million, and the State Department said in an Aug. 4 letter that it was obligating that amount for the U.N.’s regular budget. The payment would cover less than 15% of the more than $5 billion the U.N. says the United States owes, although Washington disputes that total. In May, the U.N. said the United States owed $2.04 billion for the regular budget. Guterres has warned of "imminent financial collapse" caused by unpaid member-state contributions, most of which are owed by the United States, prompting large budget cuts. Any U.S. payment would depend on continued U.N. reforms, a U.S. official said, while no funds had been transferred as of Friday.
