The x402 protocol has processed more than 205 million transactions totaling $53 million across 200,000 sellers, with Coinbase facilitating 67% of the activity. The open machine-to-machine payment standard, initiated by Coinbase and now managed by an independent foundation, allows agents to discover paid resources, complete payments and continue tasks without creating an account, entering card details or subscribing. Coinbase said the financial layer emerging around AI agents is known as agentic finance, or AiFi, encompassing agentic trading and agentic commerce. AI agents can research information, make decisions and take actions for individuals and businesses, but also need core financial capabilities such as paying, receiving funds, storing value and transferring money. The exchange said Coinbase Advisor, Coinbase for Agents, x402 and Coinbase Business form an infrastructure stack for those activities. USDC accounts for 99% of on-chain agentic commerce transactions, while x402 represents 97% of agentic finance protocol usage, with the activity running on Base.
