German energy company RWE will receive $1.2 billion from a federal fund after giving up offshore wind leases in New York, California and Louisiana, under an agreement requiring investment in oil, gas or nuclear infrastructure. One account put the payment at $1.22 billion. About $900 million will fund RWE’s purchase of a Louisiana LNG stake from Stonepeak, an infrastructure investment firm co-founded and led by Australian billionaire Michael Dorrell, a Trump donor. The administration, RWE and Stonepeak deny that political contributions influenced the transaction. The deal is part of five instances this year in which the Trump administration has used public funds to terminate renewable-energy projects, with settlements approaching $4 billion and a dozen offshore wind leases voided. Critics say the arrangement lets Stonepeak reduce its exposure to a risky project without adding gas-production capacity, while Rep. Jared Huffman expands a congressional investigation and several states challenge the settlements in federal court.
