A Florida grand jury found that Gov. Ron DeSantis’s administration misappropriated $10 million in taxpayer money from a Medicaid settlement by routing it through the Hope Florida Foundation, a charity linked to first lady Casey DeSantis, to political groups that opposed a 2024 ballot measure to legalize recreational marijuana. The Leon County panel completed its sealed report in January and said the funds were misused for political purposes, but it declined criminal charges because no one took responsibility and evidence was insufficient to identify who directed the transfer. Keep Florida Clean, the political action committee tied to then-chief of staff James Uthmeier, was the prime recipient, and the panel said then-Attorney General Ashley Moody’s office knew of plans to divert the money. DeSantis did not dispute the report obtained by CBS News Miami but insisted no laws were broken and warned of consequences for the leak; Uthmeier called renewed interest a politically motivated hoax, while Moody said her office had no knowledge of how the funds would later be spent. Democratic gubernatorial nominee David Jolly called for the probe to be reopened ahead of the November contest against Republican Byron Donalds.
