SK Hynix CEO expects memory shortage to last through 2030

SK Hynix CEO Kwak Noh-jung expects the current memory semiconductor shortage to continue until the end of 2030, while warning that any subsequent downturn may differ from past cycles. He said the shift from generic memory products to customized solutions for AI customers should improve demand visibility and reduce the risk of a sudden collapse in demand. Kwak spoke on the 27th local time after meeting domestic and foreign reporters at the groundbreaking ceremony for SK Hynix’s high-bandwidth memory (HBM) advanced packaging fab in West Lafayette, Indiana. The company has not finalized additional U.S. investment locations or any front-end facility plans, but is open to regions offering water, power, talent and subsidies. It expects the Indiana site to produce the first Made in USA HBM. SK Hynix is also using a U.S. AI company as an investment platform for startups in areas including system semiconductors, networks, optics and interconnects.
