The KOSPI closed at 6,788.88 on Aug. 28, down 123.49 points, or 1.79%, ending a three-day rally as foreign investors net-sold 1.7585 trillion won and institutions sold 284.4 billion won. Samsung Electronics fell 3.38%, SK Hynix 4.45% and Samsung Biologics 6.78%, leaving the index below 7,000 more than a month after last holding that level. Volatility had eased after financial authorities raised the minimum deposit for high-risk single-stock leveraged products linked to large-cap companies from 10 million won to 30 million won, with the VKOSPI closing at 50.08 on Aug. 28 versus an intraday peak of 97.99 in late June. However, August trading volume, value and turnover fell to their lowest levels of the year, while brokerages said retail losses, slower inflows and weaker expected earnings growth could keep the market range-bound around 7,000. Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh’s Jackson Hole remarks on persistent inflation risks also damped rate-cut expectations.
