Walmart will pay $50 million to resolve a Justice Department lawsuit alleging its pharmacies filled hundreds of thousands of illegal controlled-substance prescriptions and failed to flag suspicious orders to the Drug Enforcement Administration, fueling the opioid crisis. The settlement ends a federal case filed in 2020 under the Controlled Substances Act. Prosecutors said that over roughly four years in which Walmart shipped an estimated 37.5 million controlled-substance orders to its pharmacies, the company reported only 204 suspicious orders to the DEA. They alleged compliance staff knowingly allowed invalid prescriptions tied to pill-mill prescribers to be filled even after pharmacists raised concerns. Under the deal, Walmart must create a hotline for workers and patients to report suspected illegal dispensing, monitor pharmacy dispensing activity, and establish a system to review doctors suspected of improper prescribing. DEA assistant administrator Cheri Oz said the settlement makes clear pharmacies must identify and prevent unlawful dispensing and sets compliance obligations meant to strengthen safeguards. Walmart has faced prior opioid-related resolutions, including a 2022 settlement of state and local suits cited in different accounts as $3.1 billion and $1.3 billion; remaining non-federal cases are separate. Other pharmacy chains have reached large state settlements, including a 2023 Kroger accord for $1.2 billion. CDC figures cited in coverage put U.S. overdose deaths involving prescription drugs at about 806,000 from 1999 to 2023, with broader tallies of opioid-involved deaths since 1999 running higher when later years are included.
