Walmart has settled a U.S. government lawsuit accusing the retailer of contributing to a nationwide opioid epidemic by unlawfully dispensing prescriptions through its pharmacies, the Department of Justice said on Aug. 28. The settlement resolves allegations that Walmart pharmacies failed to comply with obligations under the Controlled Substances Act, the federal law governing controlled drugs, when dispensing opioids and other controlled substances. The terms were not immediately available.
