Syria has processed its first international card payment in more than 15 years after Mastercard and QNB Group reconnected the country’s payment ecosystem to Mastercard’s global network. QNB Syria handled the first point-of-sale transaction at an authorized local merchant using an internationally issued Mastercard. The payment demonstrates that the supporting infrastructure is operational and establishes a basis for broader international card acceptance, linking consumers, businesses and financial institutions to the global digital economy. Syria’s central bank governor called the development an important step in modernizing payments, while QNB and Mastercard said they would continue working with local institutions and ecosystem partners to expand secure digital-payment adoption.
