American players Jessica Pegula and Frances Tiafoe said tennis is moving in the right direction on diversity, while emphasizing that affordability remains a significant barrier to participation. Pegula highlighted the sport's global reach, citing Black players and growing interest in Asia through athletes including the Philippines' Alex Eala and China's Qinwen Zheng. Tiafoe pointed to stronger representation near the top of the men's game, including his Cincinnati Open final against France's Arthur Fils, the first ATP 1000 final contested by two Black players. The USTA's 2026 U.S. Tennis Participation Report found that 3.7 million Black Americans played tennis at least once in 2025, more than 450,000 above the previous year. Hispanic/Latino players represented 19% of U.S. participants in 2025, up from 18% in 2024, while Asian/Pacific Islander players accounted for 11%, unchanged from 2024. Tiafoe said improving affordability would take time.
