Brazilian senator Flavio Bolsonaro, the main opposition candidate in the country’s presidential election, said he will respect the electoral process and the results of the October vote, seeking election under the current rules. The right-wing lawmaker is the eldest son of former President Jair Bolsonaro, who is serving a 27-year prison sentence for attempting to overturn his 2022 defeat to President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. Jair Bolsonaro was convicted by a panel of Brazil’s Supreme Court last September for plotting a coup to remain in power after losing the election, after years of questioning the use of electronic voting machines. Flavio Bolsonaro also said he intends to grant amnesty to people convicted over the January 2023 riot in Brasilia if elected. He further distanced himself from the U.S. government’s July tariffs on Brazilian goods, which were imposed over alleged unfair trade practices. The Trump administration had imposed levies on Brazil the previous year over what Washington called a "witch hunt" against Jair Bolsonaro during his trial; those tariffs were later removed.
