Bitcoin addresses that had long sat idle moved 6,427.59 dormant BTC, worth about $507 million, across 188 spends between Aug. 1 and Aug. 30, 2026, leaving July’s much smaller wave of sleeping-coin activity far behind. Daily volume averaged roughly 214.25 BTC, about 5.3 times July’s 40.78 BTC pace, when only 30 spends from 2010–2017 wallets shifted 1,264.16 BTC. The 2014 cohort led with 3,286.26 BTC in 94 transfers, including a tightly coordinated Aug. 19 sweep of 22 wallets, while 2016 and 2013 ranks followed. Eight transfers from 2010–2011 wallets moved more than 200 BTC, and other vintage years added hundreds more. The surge followed reported Coldcard firmware-exploit losses near 2,000 BTC and customer-data breach disclosures by SafePal and Trezor, prompting speculation that early holders are reassessing custody even though no direct link is established. Separate August moves still included a 10 BTC wallet dormant since 2011 and other multi-year inactive holdings as bitcoin traded near the high-$70,000s.
