MapQuest rejected the change, introduced custom-name map downloads and reported hundreds of thousands of new downloads, with usage reaching 50 times average levels in recent days. Sensor Tower data cited by TechCrunch recorded 162,000 U.S. downloads and 184,000 global downloads during the week beginning Aug. 24, 2026. MapQuest parent System1 shares rose 25.4% to $2.37 after reaching $2.63, although they remained down 40% year-to-date in 2026. Apple Maps had not changed its Lake Ontario listing, while the naming dispute drew opposition from Canadian officials, cartography experts and the Seneca Nation amid heightened U.S.-Canada trade tensions.
