PeckShield recorded 50 major cryptocurrency-related hacks in August 2026, up 67% from July's 30 incidents and the highest monthly total of the year, while aggregate losses fell 49.5% to approximately $136.3 million from about $270 million. Average losses declined to roughly $2.7 million per incident from about $9 million in July, and the 10 largest incidents accounted for approximately $123.34 million. Tectonic, the largest decentralized-finance lending protocol on Cronos, accounted for about $74 million after an attacker manipulated thinly traded TONIC collateral and borrowed liquid assets. Estimates ranged from about $66 million to $75 million, while a separate analysis put gross pool outflows at $119.5 million before liquidations and bad debt. Only about $6 million to $6.29 million reached Ethereum before Cronos validators halted the network, later restored it to a pre-attack state and resumed block production. Other major incidents included Moonwell's roughly $8.7 million Base exploit involving manipulated MAMO collateral and the $7.9 million Coinsbuy incident involving Ethereum and TRON wallets, with some funds routed through exchanges and toward Monero. April remained 2026's costliest month at approximately $646.89 million, largely because the Drift and KelpDAO exploits together accounted for around $577 million.
